I'm hoping to create a resource for people dealing with this condition. I'm lucky to have been cured but I'm aware that there are tons of women living with this. What Is Vaginismus?
According to the NHS website, Vaginismus is defined as:
Vaginismus is when the muscles around the vagina tighten involuntarily when penetration of the vagina is attempted. It makes sexual intercourse difficult or impossible (the vagina can completely close up) and it can be painful.
There are two types of vaginismus:
- primary vaginismus, when you have never been able to have sex because of the condition, or
- secondary vaginismus, when you have previously been able to have sex but now find it difficult or impossible.

How I dealt With It
The first thing you need to realise is that it isn't your fault. Women who suffer with this often feel like their bodies are defective in some way. It is not. Second, you need help so reach out for it. Vaginismus is still relatively under cover but many more doctors know about it these days. I had primary Vaginismus so I self Referred myself to a Psychosexual Therapist on the NHS. I saw her for about a year. In that time, I went through an intense journey. She gave me a set of Amielle Comfort Dilators which I was able to get on prescription. We talked through all my anxieties. She encouraged me to keep on top of the intimacy in my marriage. I think because my DH was actively involved in my treatment, It didn't tear us apart instead it pulled us closer.
It takes time but you'll get there.
